Council staff described the building’s awning and the front facade beneath it as links to its history and major points of contention in the development, which will demolish the majority of the building’s frontage.
At Tuesday’s meeting councillor Neil Jones questioned why the architect had chosen to make the awning higher and whether it was worth reusing the existing pressed metal.
“I find it a bit ironical with an ultramodern facade that is quite high with mixed glass panels,” he said.
“I think the nature of the glazing is excessive ... but I do question how relevant some of the heritage retention is to the whole building.
“But having said that it’s another building that needs development and that part of the streetscape has had significant modification.”
The development’s architect Greg Schwenke said construction could begin in early 2015.
