Dylan Geoffrey Wright, 20, was given a non-parole period of 18 months by Judge Stephen Norrish. 

He was also sentenced to 12 months’ prison for driving while disqualified and drink-driving. 

But with time served Wright would be eligible for parole on February 15, 2015. 

Wright broke into the mother’s home in Prince Street on July 26, 2012 at 12.30am by forcing open a ground floor window. 

He walked through the house and stole a plasma television, two cameras, a wireless internet dongle, a wallet, a mobile phone and car keys. 

He attempted to open the door of the woman’s 18-year-old son’s bedroom, but the latch on the door became stuck and the 18-year-old woke up. 

The son snuck out of his room, heard Wright’s nylon parachute pants and quickly hid back in his room.

Crown facts said the son was too terrified to call police for fear of Wright hearing him. 

Meanwhile, Wright set the woman’s car alarm off while he was stealing the car. 

He drove out Orange Road towards Manildra and hit a tree. 

The car rolled several times but Wright managed to escape the Nissan Patrol and told passers-by he had hitch-hiked. 

During his sentencing hearing Wright told the court he stole the car so he could visit his sick grandfather. 

Wright said he was on a cocktail of drugs when he committed the crime and had not slept for 10 days. 

“There’s no explanation ... I’ve done wrong” he said.

“I wasn’t in the right frame of mind”. 

This is Wright’s first adult offence.
