CANOBOLAS Rural Technology High School Year 10 student Rebecca Steedman has hit back at allegations students not in uniform were subjected to “humiliation” and said the truth was a far different story.
She said she could not possibly comprehend what possessed students to talk to Central Western Daily staff over claims they were “embarrassed” after they were asked to come to the front of assembly for wearing the incorrect uniform.
She herself had once been asked to the front, after the assembly, because she was wearing an incorrect item, but the purpose of it was simply to offer students the correct items.
“It definitely was not harassment,” she said.
She said she spoke up because it was important the outside community saw Canobolas Rural Technology High School for what it is.
The best school around according to Rebecca.
“There’s so many good things that go on there, so many different things,” she said.
Rebecca said she agreed with a recent uniform blitz because it taught students to be proud of where they come from, who they were and prepared them for life outside of school.
“Our uniform is immaculate if you wear it properly,” she said.
“A uniform doesn’t make us all the same, it just makes us all equal.”
Most students wore the uniform correctly and it was not unreasonable to ask them to do so she said.
She said the uniform blitz was not excessive and students who did not have the right items were given them to wear for the day.
“You can’t expect to rock up to work in whatever you want"
“You can’t expect to rock up to work in whatever you want,” she said.
Rebecca had been to several different schools before Canobolas High because her family moved around and Canobolas was by far the school she was the most happy to be part of.
She said in the playground there were rarely set friendship groups, rather everyone was friends with everyone else because it was a smaller school.
She said the school staff would go out on a limb to help anyone who asked.
“I am very proud to go to Canobolas.”
