Western took out the 2013 championships in emphatic style, and also won the 2011 tournament, and is looking to continue building its reputation as a state volleyball heavyweight.
Kelso’s Denison College and Blayney High School make up the majority of the squad, with six and three representatives respectively, while West Wyalong High boasts one.
The young, new-look Western squad dominated North West in its competition opener, winning in straight sets 25-10, 25-10.
Western continually looked to the power of Blayney High’s Mathew Reeks, who proved unstoppable on the spike, securing countless points for his team through the North West mid-court.
Tall timber Lachie Farr, also from Blayney High, starred in Western’s second match, but was unable to inspire the red and greens to a win.
Western went down in straight sets to Sydney West 25-22, 25-17.
The favourites for the championship emerged yesterday, with Hunter, Sydney East, and Sydney West all undefeated after the opening day.
Western will look to continue its dominance on Wednesday against Sydney North at 9.45am, before taking on Riverina at midday and South Coast at 2.15pm.
The final games will be played on Thursday to decide the state champions.
