Describing the blossoming event as “a spectacular show”, Orange District Horticulture Association president Bob Smith said some of the entries for this year’s event, particularly those from Canberra, were beautiful.

Edging out fellow botany enthusiasts for the major prize, Canberra’s Graeme and Sharon Davis took home the grand champion dahlia trophy.

“It was a spectacular show, very well patronised,” Mr Smith said, with the main prize eluding entrants from Blayney, Orange and Cowra.

“It was both a financial and social success.”

On top of the grand champion prize heading back to the home of Floriade, the Davis’ nailed the Orange dahlia championship, the most successful exhibitor in dahlias and the champion rose prizes to cap a highly successful show for the Canberra residents.

Not to be out done by the visitors, home-grown Bob and Liz Smith showed off their decorative sides, claiming the most successful exhibitor in roses, the most outstanding exhibit in miscellaneous, the most successful exhibitor in miscellaneous and the Lavelle Trophy for the most successful exhibitor in vegetables.

Dorothy McKeon took home the most outstanding exhibit in pot plants and the Marilyn Hamilton trophy for the most successful exhibitor in pot plants.

Narine Branks won the most outstanding exhibit in floral art.

Champion novice dahlia went to the impressive Graeme Hamilton.

Mr Smith said the event, held at the St Barnabas Church Hall, was highly successful.

“There were some beautiful flowers,” Mr Smith added.

“And the entrants from Canberra were particularly impressive.”
