With five players on debut, all of which were 15 or younger, Kinross-CYMS battled to compete against a Mandy George-led two blues at the Cook Hockey Complex as the hosts ran in five goals either side of half-time to romp home with the points.
“We had a lot of kids playing ... half of them were 15 and under, including our goalie (Erin Abrahams),” Kinross-CYMS coach Pete Shea said.
“We struggled a little bit against a pretty decent Bathurst Souths side, but the girls walked away from the match now knowing what it takes to play at that level.”
Stacey Tomlinson was the major goal scorer for the hosts, netting four winners, while Mandy George and Maddy Boyce both recorded a brace.
Kate Dooley and Rebecca O’Connor were Souths’ other goal scorers.
Making the Bathurst side’s nine-goal win all the more impressive, it came with a host of class players unavailable - Michelle Somers, Sarah and Jess Watterson, Ali Stanford, Amelia Burke and Tahnie Iseldale all absent.
Simply, Souths can only get better.
“I’ve always had belief in them, but yeah that score today was a bit of a surprise. We didn’t expect to come out and dominate like that,” Souths coach Damien Carter said.
“It was just awesome, the girls really showed what they can do and they will have that belief in themselves now.
“You take six starting players out of our side and for us to still do that. They were missing players too, we had six out and they had about six out, and just look at the difference between the two sides.”
Kinross did have some joy when a quick Tania Jachi break pressured Souths into conceding an own goal, but at 7-1 it was only a small consolation.
“Ten goals were great and it could have been more too - we could’ve had another seven or eight goals,” Carter said.
“Their young goalie, she apparently hasn’t even played A grade before and she made some really nice saves.”
BATHURST SOUTHS 10 (Stacey Tomlinson 4, Mandy George 2, Maddy Boyce 2, Kate Dooley, Rebecca O’Connor) defeated KINROSS-CYMS 1 (own goal).
