Scoring four goals in 18 games last season and just five the year before, Feds’ 2014 campaign got off to a great start a fortnight ago courtesy of a 2-all draw with defending women’s premiers Bathurst St Pat’s.
But against the lowly ranked Zig Zag the red and blues weren’t as clinical, letting a number of golden opportunities in front of goal slip.
Locked at 1-all with 10 minutes remaining at the Orange Hockey Centre, Feds had their chance to skip ahead but the visitors were the ones to take the advantage, scoring late then maintaining their lead to steal the four crucial points.
Feds coach Mark Pengilly said the 2-1 loss was a little disappointing.
“We just didn’t play to the structures we wanted to,” he said.
“We were a little slow to the pass and we let them dictate the play.”
Feds started the clash on the back foot, with Lithgow hitting a 1-nil lead before Feds’ centre-half Sarah Kelly nailed the equaliser before the break to set up an enthralling second period.
The second half, however, wasn’t Feds’.
Lithgow took the upper hand as the home side missed a number of chances inside the circle.
Happy his team was creating the chances to score in just the second round of the 2014 season, Pengilly said his next challenge was ensuring Feds now capitalise in front of goal.
“We’re getting better and the girls are happy with the way they’re playing, we just need to work on finishing off the chances we’re creating a little better,” Pengilly said, with Feds led by Renee Burrell, Anna Evans and Kelly.
“We’ve got (Lithgow) Panthers next week in Orange. That’ll be a good test for our girls.”
