Nick Devitt, Father Devitt’s pet dog, pranced up to the front of the group of Catherine McAuley Catholic Primary School students to accept his award, tongue lolling about in apparent disbelief.
He was presented with a trophy and a medal that read: Awesome Dog Award 2014.
Nick was acknowledged for his work with the elderly, dedication to making children smile and his contribution to the Catholic faith by attending every mass, wedding and funeral in the St Mary’s and St Joseph’s parish, and for having an all-round caring personality.
For nine years Nick has stood by Father Devitt’s side as he wished couples lifelong happiness during weddings, consoled grieving families during funerals, and imparted God’s wisdom on hundreds of churchgoers at weekly masses.
Nick’s acknowledgment even overshadowed the school’s presentation to Father Devitt, who was also acknowledged by the students.
