WENTWORTH Golf Club stalwart Steve Bray retained the lead in the A grade City of Orange Veterans Golf Classic after shooting a six-over 74 in round two, at the Orange Ex-Services Country Club on Tuesday.

Bray shot 77 around Duntryleague in Monday’s first round and, after backing up yesterday, sits atop the A grade scratch leaderboard with 151 off the stick.
His nearest competitor is ace Country Club golfer Alan Gordon, who shot 76 yesterday and 79 on Monday to sit four strokes behind on 155.
Merewether’s Bruce Welsh has extended his lead in the B grade scratch to seven shots after shooting 81 yesterday, backing up his round one score of 90, with a total of 171. Bayview’s John Crook is in second, on 178.
The final round of the C grade scratch will be a nerve-wracking one for Kareela’s Kevin Maughan, who leads by three strokes from Ken Morris of Stonebridge. Maughan shot 87 yesterday, and 89 on Monday to sit on 176, while Morris is on 179 after scores of 89 and 90 in rounds one and two respectively.
The men’s 54-hole stableford is equally as tight, with Jim Pettit of Port Kembla leading A grade on 73 points, just four points in front of Nelson Bay’s Emile Billett (69.
Welsh (72) leads B grade from Michael Sykes (71), of Manilla.
In C grade, Maughan (77) leads Morris (75).
The leaderboard remained tight late on day two of the women’s 54-hole stableford, played at Wentworth Golf Club.
In A grade, Roz Wynn from Russell Vale continued her good form, netting 30 points to follow her score of 37 on Monday to go into the final round of play in first place, on 67 points.
Just one point behind is Nola Maughan from Kareela, who also came in with 30 points yesterday, backing up her 36 from Monday.
Denise Squires kept her lead in B grade, following her huge 41-point haul in round one with a solid 35 yesterday, to lead by six points on 76.
Her nearest competitor is Richmond’s Annette Leck, who knocked up 30 points yesterday. Leck finished with 40 points in round one, taking her overall total to 70.
Just one point separates the top two women in C grade as well, with Kiama’s Lyn Deegan leading on 69 points after rounds of 33 and 36, and Kareela’s Margaret Shanahan in second with 68, having shot 31 and 37 in rounds one and two respectively.
Today is a rest day before the final round of the championship tomorrow. The men will play at Wentworth, and the women at Duntryleague.
