A Commonwealth Games gold medallist, South African Burkett and pairs partner Michael Clarke dominated section six of the Eagle, defeating the Orange City team of Paul Ruggiero and Aeran Harman by 24 shots before winning round two by 30 shots over Russell Cox and Dean Roach.
Equally dominant, world number two and Ireland representative Jeremy Henry combined brilliantly with Warilla teammate Jared Hamilton to win both of their opening rounds.
Taking on Millthorpe’s Dane Hamilton and Steve Chapman, both Henry and Hamliton shone to win by 13 shots before recording a big 25-shot triumph over John French and Reg Robinson in the second round.
Both appear the sides to beat as the Golden Eagle reaches rounds three and four today.
Also in the hunt for a quarter-finals place following strong starts are last year’s champions Glen Raymond and Phil Westcott, who enjoyed two wins to top section three, and the Orange City father-son combination of Paul and Michael Davis who lead section one after wins in the opening two rounds.
Heading into today’s Eagle action, Inverell’s Troy Wright and Doug Newton head section four, John Archer (Forster) and Tom Leonard (Country Club) have combined well to lead section five, and section seven has the Terrigal team of Roy Rogers and Dave Limbrick on top.
