Late on Monday Gordon led the field with a scratch score of 79, strong enough to be two shots ahead of Nowra’s Warwick Merchant (81) to lead the A grade field of the 54-hole championship.
Bayview’s John Crook leads the B grade scratch race with 85 off the stick.
Four strokes back, Ballina’s Ross Goodwin is in second with scratch score of 89.
Ken Morris has emerged as the early favourite of the C grade title race after 18 holes, hitting 89 off the stick to lead Duntryleague’s Martin Caro (98) by nine strokes.
In the stableford race, Horton Park’s Henry Kubacki (38 points) leads A grade, Crook (38) tops the B grade standings and Morris shot the score of the day to earn 40 points on a difficult Duntryleague course yesterday.
The women’s 54-hole stableford event began yesterday at the Ex-Services Country Club.
Howlong’s Pat Young leads the A grade field with 37 stableford points, alongside Roz Wynn from Russell Vale (37).
It’s tight in B grade with Denise Squires from Forbes on top with 41 points.
Richmond’s Annette Leck is next best with 40 points.
Horton Park’s Marion Thomas is also in the hunt with 38 points.
The ladies resume today at Wentworth.
The men will continue with the second round of the 54-hole classic today at the Country Club course.
Tomorrow is a rest day before the final round of the championship is completed on Thursday with them men at Wentworth and the ladies at Duntryleague.
