DUNTRYLEAGUE has qualified for the final of all four Central Western District Golf Association pennants divisions following a dominant display of matchplay golf in the competition’s semi-finals last Sunday.

Pitted against Bathurst in division one at Country Club, Duntryleague came up trumps 4-1 with Dean Turner (2up), Mal Gregor (4 and 3), Rob Parfett (1up) and Wayne Carpenter (4 and 3) recording victories to head into Sunday’s final against Mudgee at Wellington in ominous form.
Mudgee qualified for the final with a similarly dominant win, dropping just half a point to claim the spoils over Parkes at Wellington.
By virtue of being in the opposite pool to Mudgee throughout the division one preliminary rounds, Duntryleague hasn’t played their final opponent yet in 2013 but Dean Turner believes that’s not an issue heading into another decider.
“We know most of the guys in their side,” Turner said.
“That was a good win for them on the weekend.”
The fact Sunday’s venue was also the scene of Mudgee’s dominant win over Parkes wasn’t a concern either.
“Most of our guys go over to Wellington for their Open every year any way,” Turner added.
“We all enjoy it. If anything it’ll probably help Payney too. He grew up in those parts and has taken out the club championship there a couple of times.”
Turner said Duntryleague’s ability to remain in the contest ensured Sunday’s decider wasn’t going to be an easy assignment for Mudgee.
“I think Parfey had a good win. He was four down at the halfway mark (against Bathurst’s Jarryd Bird) and came back to win,” Turner said.
“I think everyone is capable of hanging in there. If we can get off to a good start then we’ll be in good shape.”
Duntryleague won its division two semi-final handsomely, claiming a 3.5-1.5 victory over Dubbo at Wellington, while at Country Club, a 7 and 6 win by Marco Pasquali led Duntryleague to 3-2 division three win over Bathurst.
In its division four semi-final also at Country Club, Duntryleague’s Steve Gander shot an 8 and 7 triumph to propel his team to a narrow 3-2 win over Bathurst.
Duntryleague will play Forbes in division two after a 4-1 thumping of Wellington, while Dubbo (division three, 5-nil) and Parkes (division four, 3-2) have progressed through to meet Duntryleague after healthy wins over Wentworth and Parkes respectively.
