Among the volunteers are Denis Marsh and Peter West, who will collect rubbish along roads, in waterways and open spaces to do their bit for the environment.

“Illegally-dumped rubbish, fast food packaging and recyclable plastic and glass drink bottles are among the most commonly collected items at the Ophir Road and Clifton Grove clean up venues,” Mr West said.

“Roadsides and public recreation areas outside of town seem to attract nearly as much rubbish as in town.

“It is rewarding and enjoyable to come together with neighbours and the community to clean up our local area."

Mr West said removing rubbish also benefited wildlife, including the platypus, which could become “easily entangled and drown in thoughtlessly discarded items like plastic bags or fishing line”.

“We would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone who would like to lend a hand for this important event,” he said.

A barbecue will be held for participants after the clean-up at the Mud Hut in Clifton Grove from 12.15pm.

Volunteers are asked to bring study footwear, gloves and a hat.
