Margo Spark said her dog Lou Lou sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack, which occurred about 5.30pm on Sunday, February 16, after a young woman lost control of the large dog she was walking.
Mrs Spark said the large dog dragged the woman, who was still holding the leash, several metres along the ground until it reached Lou Lou and attacked, targeting her hind legs and hip.
After much screaming and intervention the dogs were separated, leaving Lou Lou badly injured and requiring surgery and ongoing veterinarian care.
“She really suffered,” Mrs Spark said.
Mrs Spark said Lou Lou spent two nights at the vet clinic and is now recovering at home.
“She ended up with a cracked femur and a big hunk out of her, and they had to open her up to clean out the wound,” she said.
Mrs Spark and her husband Tony were concerned that large dogs such as the one that attacked their dog were not being properly controlled while in public areas.
While the woman walking the dog seemed distraught by what had happened, she did not leave her name or contact details.
“We’d like to see her come forward and realise what her dog did to our dog,” she said.
Not only is Lou Lou the Sparks’ beloved family pet, she is also a medical alert dog who helps Mrs Spark manage her diabetes.
“We take her most places with us,” she said.
