Yesterday dawned a little brighter for the residents of Trunkey Creek after firefighters were able to make some good progress on the Hells Hole fire overnight.

Rural Fire Service deputy incident Controller, Superintendent David Jones, said backburns were carried out through Wednesday night and with the addition of more containment lines, firefighters should now be able to contain the north-east portion of the fire.
However, because easterly winds were putting pressure on the southwest corner, bulldozers had gone in to cut extra containment lines.
“It’s really rugged country in there,” Superintendent Jones said.
“A lot has been blacked out. We are getting close to having it contained.
“In the last 14 hours we’ve made some really good gains and were able to get on top of it.
“It is a really big battle, but we’ve almost got this fire in line.”
