Police stormed the man's ground floor unit in a social housing complex in Waratah Avenue after trying to negotiate with him and convince him to give himself up.

Detectives, the dog squad and senior police forced their way into the house after they used a battering ram to break down the door just before 4.30pm.

Acting Inspector Sergeant Brenden Turner, of Orange police, said the man's arrest was a good result.

"It is fortunate no one was injured," he said.

Police have taken the man to Orange Police Station for questioning while they search the unit for firearms.

The siege began when the man called triple-O at 2.50pm on Sunday afternoon, claiming he had guns and ammunition and wanted to shoot police.

Police raced to the scene and quickly closed off Frost and Kenna streets and set up a nearby command post.
