Professor Ian Jack’s management plan for the former Templer’s Mill site recommends an archaeological dig nearby to find the location of the cottage described as being “eight chains” from the Paterson obelisk.
All councillors agreed for the council’s general funds to be spent on the updated study, but several raised concerns about engaging an outside consultant.
“I believe we could do some further investigation locally with local historians,” Cr Neil Jones said.
“I find the mystery of his birthplace adds to the whole story.”
Cr Chris Gryllis supported the study but described it as a waste of time, saying all everyone needed to know was that Paterson was born in the area.
Cr Kidd said it was fact Paterson was born on the Narrambla Estate but the study may find out the exact building.
