Consistency is the key in the race to become King and thus far Wright has been just that, placing in the top three once - second in the car simulator test - but never finishing far from the top five in the four events run over the course of Saturday and Sunday in Orange.
Just two points behind Wright (147 points) is Tim West, with defending champion Anthony Wharton looming large a further point back in third.
Eighteen-year-old Henry Savage has impressed in his Games debut and sits in fourth leading into today’s events, the squash, the 3.2 kilometre run around Gosling Creek and a mystery event.
The race for the Queen is never far from predictable, with Nicole Williamson a clear early leader with 178 points.
Williamson’s old foe Cathy Johnson is on 168 points in second place with Jess Richards just two points off Johnson with 166.
Eight Day Games secretary Jason Lyne said young Savage has been particularly impressive over the course of the first two days.
“He’s been doing really well,” Lyne said, adding Wright was also very strong in each event.
“It’s Simon’s ninth year and he’s come close to winning it a few times but never quite got there.”
Williamson siblings, Nicole and Mitch, took out the athletics, Savage and Nicole Williamson won the swimming, the car simulator test was won by Bridgette Burge and Troy Thomas, while the canoeing was taken out Leanne Nicholls and Tim West.
Today’s events begin with the squash from 3.30pm.
