ORANGE has named a 14-man squad for the second round of the 2013-14 Western Zone Premier League, with injury clouds hanging over a couple of key bowling figures.
Still reeling from the same injuries that forced their withdrawal from Mitchell’s final inter-council trial against Macquarie last Saturday, Jackson Coote (shoulder) and Liam Gough (side strain) have been named but will need to prove their fitness before making the trip to Bathurst on Sunday.
Should the left-arm duo be forced to watch from the stands it’ll prove a massive blow for Orange as they search for a maiden representative win in 2013-14 against Bathurst.
But co-coach Steve Ryan was remaining positive.
As close to a derby game as the WZPL has, Ryan said this game against Bathurst is a match the young Orange outfit is desperate to clinch.
“Exactly. This is a game we want to win and we believe we can. We’ll be going down with a bit of confidence,” Ryan said.
Orange’s season didn’t get off to the best start.
Chasing a mammoth 5-380 after Parkes opener Anthony Heraghty went ballistic in an innings of 178, Orange couldn’t match it and were all out for 181 in the 37th over to finish match one with a 199-run loss.
Ryan and fellow coach Steve Warrington have brought experience into the squad, with wicketkeeper-batsman Nick Dunlop drafted alongside Centrals teammate Dan Sandford, both members of Orange’s Western Zone SCG Cup winning side in 2010.
With results tough to come by, Ryan said this season’s representative campaign was about the future.
“We’ve got a number of kids in the team again this week and we’re showing faith and we’re hoping to build,” Ryan said, with young Kinross opener Toby Polkinghorne also called into the side.
“Then we’ve got a bit of experience coming back into the side in Dunny and Sanga (Sandford).”
Orange plays Bathurst in round two of the WZPL on Sunday.
