AN anticipated bumper Melbourne Cup day crowd will have a jam-packed race program to go along with it at Towac Park on Tuesday.
Once-a-year punters and fashion die-hards alike are set to flock Towac Park for the race that stops a nation at Flemington, and on five occasions at Towac Park punters will be treated to stronger-than-usual races in Orange.
In total 56 acceptances were taken for Tuesday’s meeting, the second for the spring racing season for Racing Orange.
The main race, the $6000 Southern Cross Austereo Benchmark 46 Handicap (2100 metres) has racing officials brimming, with eight horses and two emergencies on stand-by.
Traditionally the main race on Melbourne Cup day is hard to fill, with meetings scattered across the region spreading the Western Districts stocks thin as the region celebrates Australia’s most prestigious thoroughbred race.
But Racing Orange chair Ellie Brown believes the full book is a show of support for the club, with over 2000 punters set to back-up that industry support in their droves.
“We’re very happy with the acceptances,” Brown said. “We had fantastic acceptances in our last meeting and it looks as though it’s flown on into Melbourne Cup day. It’s great to see the support continuing for Racing Orange and our reputation is growing.”
“Melbourne Cup day is usually tricky. Lots of people and lots of jockeys love to be everywhere but we’re glad the support for us has continued.”
Racing Orange is only permitted to run fields of eight on Melbourne Cup day.
Such is the support in 2013, each race on the five-race program is full.
Of the Orange trainers, Lee Van Den Bos, Alison Smith, Syliva Szabo, Don Oakley and Sonja Sharp accepted for the Melbourne Cup day meeting.
Strong bookings will ensure the day is a hit, and Brown was confident a large crowd will be on hand come time for the first race on Tuesday.
“We’re expecting a lot of people to stream through the gates on the day as well,” she said.
Race one, the Millamolong Polo Club Maiden Plate (1300 metres) will jump at 1.50pm.
Gates open at 11.30am.
