MITCHELL selectors have had their hand forced ahead of tomorrow’s inter-council trial against Macquarie, with Orange City duo James Conn and Jackson Coote both ruled out through injury.
Having their final chance to impress Western Zone selectors dashed by shoulder injuries, Coote and Conn have made way for Orange and Cavaliers quick Liam Gough and Blayney gun batsman Jameel Qureshi.
“It brings back a lot of experience to the side,” Mitchell coach Matt Tabbernor said.
“Both Liam and Jameel were part of the squad that played last year and Liam obviously went on to play Western Zone. It brings a lot back to our bowling and our batting line-up.”
Mitchell went down against Lachlan by 88 runs in the first inter-council trial last Sunday at Wade Park.
Set 185 for victory, Mitchell limped to be all out for 97.
Batting is the obvious starting point for any further improvement come tomorrow’s game against a Macquarie attack boasting Zone stalwart Tim Cox.
Crediting his side’s effort in the field as “excellent” against Lachlan, Tabbernor believes it’s Mitchell’s bowling that’ll again need to lift to challenge the might of Macquarie.
“If you let their batsmen bat for 10 to 15 overs they’ll take the game away from you,” he said.
“Jason Ryan, Jordan Moran, guys like that and a couple of Sri Lankan guys, Tehaan Henning and (Tharindu) Perera, we haven’t see much of them, which makes them dangerous.
“I think the goal is to learn from Sunday and improve on the areas that let us down.
“Our bowling and fielding was excellent, I can’t fault that, but we have to bat in partnerships. If we do those things I’m confident we’ll get a win.”
Mitchell takes on Macquarie from 10am tomorrow at Wade Park.
Conn is expected to play for Orange City this weekend, but will not bowl, while Coote will be forced to sit out the entire weekend for the Warriors and Mitchell.
In the final inter-council trial of 2013-14 will be played out between Macquarie and Lachlan on Sunday.
