THE Deadwood Rugby Club line up for tomorrow’s HeartKids Cup charity game in Orange includes men who have played in the Australian Sevens side, Samoa and for Super Rugby teams the Waratahs and Western Force.
The majority are regulars in Sydney’s Shute Shield competition.
But they’re worried about what they’ll come up against when they take on the Central West Invitational side on Saturday at Endeavour Oval.
“We don’t know what we’re up against and we’re a bit nervous,” Deadwood Rugby founder Scott Podmore said.
“It’s hard when you don’t know the people you’re playing.”
Still, the Deadwood boys boast plenty of experience, so they shouldn’t have too much to get nervous about.
Included in the side is five-eighth Dave Harvey, who has played for the Western Force, and back-rower AJ Gilbert, who has played with the Waratahs and in the Australian Sevens side.
Plus, you’ve got Will Brame, who has played for Samoa, and guys like Podmore and Ian Parkinson, who have lined up with the Australian Barbarians.
The Central West boys finished their season in September but the Deadwood guys have been keeping busy.
Fitness won’t be a problem for them.
“The boys have played three weeks straight of sevens tournaments. It will be good to play 15s again,” Podmore said.
Last weekend they lined up in the semi-finals of the Central Coast Sevens where they lost to eventual runners-up Red Rock.
The Deadwood guys are excited about NSW Waratahs coach Michael Cheika coming along to watch the game and help coach the Central West side.
“That’s motivation because there will be a few polite gestures to him like ‘Cop that Cheikas’,” Podmore laughed.
“I’m sure his presence will bring out the best in all the players.”
The Deadwood players will put the region’s juniors through some drills in the HeartKids coaching clinic on Saturday afternoon before the charity match.
There are still places available in the clinic for children aged between five and 14.
It will run from 1.30pm-4.30pm on Saturday at Endeavour Oval and costs $40.

Saturday’s charity game at Endeavour Oval kicks off at 6pm and entry is $5.
