Magistrate Terry Lucas suspended Robert Cran’s licence for 12 months, as well as handing him a suspended jail sentence for four charges, including Skye’s Law.
Cran, 49, already had a suspended licence on August 29 when, according to police facts tendered to the court, he saw a police car, did a sharp U turn on South Terrace and took off at speeds up to 90 km/h.
South Terrace is a highly populated, 50 km/h zone.
He hit a speed hump and the car became airborne but that was not the only time.
A few minutes later Cran slammed the vehicle into a gutter and it went into the air once more.
The chase lasted about a minute and went for 450 metres.
Cran told police at the scene that he fled in the car because he knew they would charge him.
“I was trying to see me (sic) niece, can’t you let me go this time?” Cran said, according to police facts.
The last time Cran was pulled over by police for driving while disqualified was only two days previously.
He pleaded guilty and did not apply for bail at his first hearing, which worked in his favour, Mr Lucas said.
Mr Lucas said he was satisfied Cran had shown remorse while in custody and had taken responsibility for his crime.
