A YOUNG Mitchell side will be faced with the task of stopping a “once in a generation” Lachlan outfit at Wade Park on Sunday.
Mitchell Cricket Council selectors yesterday named a new-look outfit to the one that took out last year’s inter-council open trials, with Bathurst and Orange District Cricket Associations dominating the 12-man Mitchell squad.
Lachlan’s side will be predictably made up of Parkes and Cowra players, with both side’s getting their respective Western Zone Premier League campaigns off to a flying start on Sunday via 199-run and five-wicket triumphs.
Mitchell selector David Redden is fully aware of the challenge awaiting his side at Wade Park on Sunday.
“Parkes tore it up on the weekend and Cowra gave the Blue Mountains boys a fair touch up. Lachlan will go into the game deserved favourites with Knights, Heraghty, Rosser, Rosser and Kershaw ... it’s a once in a generation Lachlan side,” Redden said.
A host of last year’s Mitchell champions have made way for nine new faces.
Jameel Qureshi, Trent Colley and Liam Gough aren’t available, while Mudgee’s Steve Knight and James O’Brien have made the move to Dubbo this summer, forcing them to pledge their allegiance to Macquarie.
Orange City have all five of Orange’s representatives, with keeper Lincoln Duncan named vice captain and Matt Findlay, Jackson Coote, Ed Morrish and James Conn also making the cut.
Fresh off a brilliant 108 against Dubbo, Bathurst’s Joey Coughlan is joined by new Mitchell skipper Daniel Casey, Matt Fearnley, Henry Shoemark and Josh Toole.
“There’s plenty of young talent in the side,” Redden enthused.
“They’re super keen. There’s positions in this year’s Western Zone side up for grabs, it’s all on the line for these boys.
“Mitchell is the defending champions in this format, we’ve got a lot to stand up for.”
Mitchell hosts Lachlan from 10am on Sunday at Wade Park.
Macquarie will tackle a double header the following week, playing Mitchell on Saturday, November 2, before backing up to play Lachlan on Sunday, November 3.
The Western Zone side will be picked following the trials.
