THIS year’s Hockey NSW under 18 girls’ indoor championship will be all about adjusting for the Orange side.
Orange were runners-up in the division two under 18s state title in 2012 and hope to feature in the final again this weekend.
The challenge will be adapting to the change in rules.
This year the number of players on the field has dropped from five to four, in addition to a goalkeeper.
“We’re all on a learning curve about what style to play,” Orange coach Mark Pengilly explained.
“It speeds it up a bit more. I think they’ve tried to open it up and create more goals. It will be a lot more running for the girls.”
Orange will line up in division two again this year and will have some tough competition from within its own region.
The Orange girls will take on Bathurst in their first game on Friday, and they also play Dubbo in their last pool match on Saturday.
In between that they’ll play Cessnock on Friday as well as Illawarra (2), and Nepean on Saturday.
“Hopefully we can win the first couple of games and then we’ll go from there,” Pengilly said.
The top two teams from each pool will square off in Sunday’s semi-finals.
The winner from each will play in the grand final.
Pool B is made up of Parkes, Macarthur (2), Southern Highlands, South Coast (2), Port Macquarie and Crookwell.
The tournament starts on Friday at Unanderra and finishes on Sunday.
