WHEN Kira Churchland takes to the WACA ground in Perth today as part of the ACT Meteors, the 23-year-old former CYMS cricketer expects nothing but the best.
Churchland will make her Women’s National Cricket League debut against the Western Australia Fury in a Twenty20 match this afternoon and believes the Meteors outfit, led by former international Kris Britt, is capable of winning it all.
“We expect the best,” Churchland said, with the ACT girls to open their season with a Twenty20 today, 50-over one-day match tomorrow and then another Twenty20 fixture on Sunday.
“We hope to make a few grand finals and hopefully win a couple. That’s always the goal at the end of the season, to win the premiership.
“I’m pretty excited, but nervous at the same time.”
The Sydney Cricket Association women’s player of the year last season and a former squad member of the NSW Breakers, Churchland has been in pre-season training for the last five months with the Meteors.
Taking to the weights while also fine-tuning bat and ball skills in the nets, Churchland was expecting the standard of cricket this season to be tougher than ever.
And rightly so.
Last year the Meteors lost to the Fury in the penultimate game of the season and in 2013-14 the WA girls line-up will feature former Australian Southern Stars representative Kate Blackwell as well as former New Zealand player Sarah Tsukigawa.
“There’s a lot of experienced girls in this competition, a lot of current and former internationals,” she said.
“Hopefully I can just add a bit of bowling and batting to the side.”
The former Orange District Cricket Association player will be one of three ACT players making their debut.
Talented top order batsman Katie Mack and seam bowler Nina Westenraad are the others.
And while further honours are still a distant goal at this stage, Churchland was happy her cricketing career was continuing to flourish.
“(Australian selection) would be great, but my priority at the moment is with the Meteors,” she said.
The Meteors and Western Australia Fury play from 2pm today in Perth.
