SPRING Hill Public School year 4 student Flynn Magee is the best junior public school speller in the western region.
He took out the junior section of the Premier’s Spelling Bee despite thinking he was not that good at spelling.
His winning word was ‘exciting’.
And he certainly was excited when his opponent, who went toe-to-toe with him for seven rounds, faulted on the word ‘flippant’.
“It was my first time and I was a bit nervous,” the nine-year-old said.
Flynn had been practicing for weeks with his parents.
His mum and dad would read him the word, say the word in a sentence and ask him to spell it, just like in the competition.
Flynn’s school has 42 students, yet he beat schools with hundreds of students.
There were 37 competitors in the junior section.
“The odds were that I probably wouldn’t win,” he said.
Flynn received a copy of the Macquarie Dictionary.
He is a lot more confident for his competition in Sydney, where he will represent public schools from Lithgow through to Bathurst and Orange.
