THE finalists have been announced for the 2013 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards.
The number of votes exceeded organisers expectations, but they were pleased the new format had worked, according to Cabonne Council community business development officer Hannah Dunlop.
After an under whelming response from businesses at last year’s event, organisers asked the community for feedback on how to make the Daroo awards more accessible.
The community called for a people’s choice format rather than businesses having to fill out a lengthy form to nominate themselves and be judged by community development officers from outside of Cabonne.
“A lot of the businesses in our communities are small businesses and they just could not find the time,” Ms Dunlop said.
The new system involved an online vote, or people could pick up a form at 16 drop-off points across the shire, however, it was strictly one vote per person.
Despite Molong having the highest population, finalists were spread across most of Cabonne’s villages.
More than 80 businesses accepted nominations from the public, with vote cast to determine the winners.
“We received just under 1000 individual voting forms, but many of those contained votes for several businesses in various categories,” Ms Dunlop said.
“It was pleasing to see an even spread of votes across Cabonne and the outcome in many categories was very close.”
In addition to the 13 categories for which businesses were nominated by customers and clients, there will be awards for the employee of the year, apprentice-trainee of the year and the coveted Best Business in Cabonne.
