HAVING spent the better part of their young junior rugby league careers winning games of footy, Saturday’s Group 10 Junior Rugby League grand final day was the moment the Bloomfield Tigers under 10s have been waiting for.
And it didn’t disappoint.
Engaging in their first decider, the Tigers came out on top with an 18-14 grand final victory over a dogged Mudgee Dragons outfit at Lithgow’s Tony Luchetti Sportsground.
“Mudgee pushed us,” Tigers trainer John Dickson said.
“We’ve played them, including carnivals, four times this season, and it’s been that way each game.”
Forced to defend for most of the first half, Bloomfield remarkably went into the break with the points advantage, with a Liam Wilson four-pointer and successful conversion taking the Tigers to a 6-nil lead.
It was short lived, however.
The Dragons came out in the second half and scored two quick tries to snatch a 10-6 lead.
But Bloomfield rallied and, after hitting back to lead 12-10, the Tigers edged further ahead to lead by eight points with Lachlan O’Dea and man of the match Liam Anderson finding the line in the final term.
A late consolation try to Mudgee with a minute of the clock took the final score to 18-14.
Dickson said the Tigers boys were rapt to come away with the win in their first graded decider, with the four-point triumph completing an undefeated season for the Bloomfield under 10s.
“Most of them have been together since they were six, but under 10s is the first year they’ve been able to play finals,” he said.
“They’ve only really lost one game in three years. They were pretty excited after the game.”
