ORANGE you’ve answered the call.
Members of the Orange hospital Blue Ladies and Men’s group have received an extraordinary response to their call for volunteers to come forward for a new grandparents’ group to help out in the children’s ward.
President Lorraine Ashbrooke said she was overwhelmed.
“It is absolutely amazing. In the last few days we have had 13 people who want to register and the inquiries are still coming in,”she said.
Mrs Ashbrooke and paediatric nurse unit manager Lyn Cantwell came up with the idea as a way of providing support for staff, parents and sick children.
“In the past when we have asked for volunteers to come forward for the Blue Ladies we might have got a couple of people at a time, but there has never been anything like this, it’s absolutely wonderful,” Mrs Ashbrooke said.
“I am going flat out now to get all the paperwork in place.”
Mrs Ashbrooke thinks the grandparents’ group has struck a chord with people across the community who have had a child in hospital.
“We have a range of people who are willing to help from a mother of five to a single mother,” she said.
Mrs Ashbrooke has already explained the role to the newest volunteers, which could also provide support for other patients in the hospital.
“I have already asked people that, if on a particular day we have plenty of volunteers in the children’s ward, would they be prepared to help us out in other areas of the hospital and in every case they have said yes,” she said.
There is still time to become involved.
