ORANGE police are warning people to ignore threats from telephone callers saying they must get their Windows computer system fixed or risk prosecution by the police.
One woman said she received a call yesterday afternoon from a caller saying they needed to access her Windows computer system or she would be in trouble with the police.
“I just said to him, ‘no you are the one who will be in trouble with the police,’ and I hung up,” the woman said.
She said the man who called her had a heavy foreign accent.
“He was probably from the sub-continent, India or Pakistan,” she said.
The woman warned others to be careful.
“There are people out there who I know could be vulnerable and are perhaps not as confident as I am, and I would hate to think they could get caught out,” she said.
Canobolas Local Area Command acting Inspector Yonneka Hill said police would definitely not be prosecuting anyone over the Windows system on their computer.
“We suggest that if someone calls you, offer to take down their number and say you will call them back, or just hang up,” she said.
“Orange police are happy to hear from anyone who has a complaint about these types of calls,” she said.
