ORANGE will field 11 of the 12 places in this year’s Western Primary Schools Sports Association boys’ softball team after Orange Public School defeated Bletchington 8-4 in the Western area championship final.
Played at Jack Brabham Oval, OPS proved too strong in the four-run triumph to have three players selected in the Western side.
Jack Taylor, Bailey Ferguson and Max Powell all earned the call-up to represent at the next level, with the trio’s work in the field during the OPS side’s win exceptional.
All three were excited to be part of the Western team.
“I’d like to get to first (base),” Powell said when the team heads off to the Macarthur Softball Association’s grounds at Camden for the three-day tournament beginning on September 17.
Taylor added: “If we can make the top six then that’d be good.”
Ferguson, though, had his sights set much higher.
“I’d like to make the state team.”
From Calare Public School, Llewie Moes, Ryan Manning, Brody Thomas and Graydon Lisle have been selected also, while Jordan Price, Trent Wilde, Samuel McDonald and Callan Naden shone for Bletchington and won selection in the Western line-up.
Benson Burgoyne of Cudgegong Valley Public School was the only non-Orange player to qualify for Western.
The Western team has been training every Wednesday at OPS since the team was announced.
Drawn in Pool C, Western tackles North West in their first game of the tournament.
They then play MacKillop and Polding as part of the other two Pool C games.
They’ll play again on day two and three before a 2013 NSWPSSA boys’ softball side is selected.
