WHILE supporters of the proposed north Orange McDonald’s are buoyed by several Orange City councillors’ plans to readdress council’s decision to reject the development, opponents of the Farrell Road location are not impressed.
The administrator of the Support North Orange McDonald’s Facebook page Jade Brindley said the councillors Russell Turner, Kevin Duffy and Scott Munro’s call for an extraordinary meeting of council in the next fortnight to allow councillors to revisit the decision was “great news”.
However Susan White, who has been vocal about her objections to the development, said she was “very disappointed” at the three councillors’ plans.
Mrs White said the trio’s argument that a rescission motion to overturn the restaurant’s rejection would avoid a costly legal bill in the Land and Environment Court didn’t make sense.
“Why is money more important than people’s safety and their lives?” she said.
“There were legitimate reasons to turn it down.”
Eight out of 11 councillors voted against the development at last week’s meeting.
Mrs White said she didn’t understand how the opinions of three councillors could override the majority.
“How can three councillors have more power than eight?” she said.
Mrs White said she also didn’t understand Cr Turner’s plan to have the independent consultants who prepared a traffic study and planning assessment for the development make a presentation to remind councillors everything met the guidelines.
“Why would the council hear from them again?” she said.
“These are the traffic consultants who say there isn’t a problem when clearly there is a problem.”
The public will have another chance to speak before councillors make a decision, but Cr Turner said he wanted those in favour of the development to be heard.
Mrs White said she doesn’t understand why they should be given special treatment.
“They’ve had the same opportunities as we have had to speak ... they failed to speak up when they should have,” she said.
“They can’t speak up after the fact.”
Mrs White said she wanted to make it clear that she doesn’t oppose a McDonald’s restaurant being built in north Orange but objects to the Farrell Road location.
“I’ve always said I’m happy to have it in north Orange just not on that dangerous site.”
