IT has been a long selection process, but Orange’s Lachie McHatton has been named in the NSW Country under 13 boys’ football side.
The 13-year-old has been attending selection trials for six months.
They started out with 46 players and just two weeks ago announced the final 16 players to attend this year’s Football Federation Australia National Youth Championships.
McHatton said he was thrilled to hear the news.
“I was excited,” he said.
Did he scream or jump up and down?
“Mum did,” he laughed.
After months of trials, McHatton knows all the players who have made the final 16.
He is confident they will be competitive at the national championships.
“We play really well together,” he said.
“I just want to win. I think we have a chance.”
The left wing said one area the team will need to work on ahead of the national event is maintaining their intensity for the entire game.
NSW Country will come up against other state metropolitan and country sides at the national competition at Coffs Harbour.
McHatton said with all the trials, he has noticed an improvement in his own game, particularly in his first touches on the ball.
NSW Country will go into a three-day camp at Coffs Harbour from September 27.
The under 13 boys’ National Youth Championships start on September 30.
