BEWARE there’s monsters in there.
One of Australia’s most loved children’s authors and illustrators Michael Salmon visited students at Catherine McAuley Catholic Primary School yesterday.
His Who’s Behind the Door and monster books have kept children entertained for generations.
It was talk of monsters and some of his other well-known characters that kept students giggling through yesterday’s talk.
“I thoroughly enjoy it and I get to do stand-up comedy for the kids,” Mr Salmon said of his speech.
“There’s a lot of theatre to it.”
His monster book including: Scroggy the monster who was afraid of the dark, Byron the monster who didn’t want to be alone and Basil the monster who was scared of water are well known to many parents and children.
“They’re monsters who have phobias,” he said.
Over the years Mr Salmon has published 172 books and sold 18 million copies all featuring illustrations he has penned.
School visits are a regular occurrence for Mr Salmon and he estimates he has delivered a speech to 1.25 million children during his career.
“It’s good old entertainment, it’s just fun stuff, he said.
Mr Salmon said he also hopes to inspire children with a love of writing, drawing and books.
“I show them the process about getting ideas,” he said.
“Look at your own world or your pets, they’re great, or make up a pet dragon.”
Mr Salmon said he has loved drawing cartoons since he was 13 years old and said it is this passion that has allowed him to live his dream so far.
