The small town of Tecoma in Victoria is also fighting the development of a McDonald’s outlet. Over 80,000 people have signed a petition against the development but this week the police were brought in to stop the protestors so construction could begin.
A McDonald’s spokeswoman reportedly said: “The company has always respected people’s right to express their opinions, but not when it puts themselves or others at risk.”
How ironic! McDonalds is supposedly concerned about the health and welfare of Tecoma residents, but is happy to put the lives of Orange citizens at risk by building an outlet at an intersection already plagued by traffic chaos.
Who will take responsibility when traffic goes into gridlock, the bypass comes to a standstill, citizens are blocked in the shopping centre car park, families are trapped at the childcare centre, or when a tragic car accident occurs?
There are several commercially-viable sites the council could make available to McDonald’s; council would still reap the dollars from a land sale and McDonald’s would sell many Big Macs.
Orange residents deserve to be heard - and we’re looking for genuine leadership!
