IT was great again to be part of an enthusiastic group of community folk out planting trees and shrubs for Orange’s 17th Planet Ark National Tree Day (before this we had planting days under the banner of Arbor Day).
It is a pleasure to go around so many public areas and see the results of these community planting days.
I have got so much pleasure out of meeting and working with such a wide variety of volunteers (often in very harsh conditions of rain, sleet and even a little snow one year).
More and more parents, grandparents and adults are bringing children along to the tree days, and it is them that will carry on the proud legacy Orange has of community input into our “garden city”.
Some folk involved are no longer with us but their legacy lives on. I often reflect on people that I was with or met at various sites around the city on those planting days and it gives me much satisfaction and pleasure.
To all the folk that took part thank-you on behalf of Orange City Council.
I have done a rough estimate of plantings over all those years and believe the figure would be in excess of 20,000 species - all of which enhances the aesthetics, ambience and environment of our wonderful city.
