Fair reason to save lives

ROMANCE, mystery, thriller or science fiction - if you love a good book head to the Lifeline book fair this weekend.

Over 15,000 fiction titles will be included in the third annual fair with proceeds to go to Lifeline’s vital crisis support services.

Not only will there be fiction, the Lifeline Central West Regis Resources Mega Book Fair will have more than 30,000 books on sale, with some available for as little as $1.

Lifeline Central West marketing manager Bethany Beattie said the fair is a great opportunity to pick up some great reads all in the name of charity.

“We take around 15,000 calls a year for Lifeline Central West,” she said.

“We get calls around suicide and everything from addiction, gambling, domestic violence.

“We actually get about 50 suicide related calls a day [in Australia].”

Ms Beattie said the muscle power to get over 30,000 books ready for the fair came thanks to Bathurst Correctional Complex’s Mobile Outreach Program for inmates.

“Six inmates and their supervisor are here...they help us keep costs down and they’ve got the muscle,” she said.

There will be a huge range of authors on offer in the fiction section alone including Di Morrissey, Jodi Picoult, Bryce Courtney and James Patteson.

“People that come and buy books directly help us to save lives,” she said.

The book fair will be from 9am to 4pm this Saturday and Sunday at the old PCYC building, 96 Byng Street.

Gold coin entry applies. If you or someone you know needs crisis support call Lifeline 24/7 on 13 11 14.
