MASTERCHEF contestant from 2011 Kumar Pereira had an audience captivated during a cooking session yesterday.
He was special guest at an Orange High School demonstration as part of a range of Seniors Week activities.
He whipped up one of his favourite recipes, coconut prawns, where wafts of chili and coconut filled the room.
Cudal’s Merle Parrish was due to attend but a last minute withdrawal had Orange High School hospitality teacher Lisa Phillips step in.
“I followed her recipe and did her cake with a chocolate ganache top,” she said.
“It turned out alright but I felt under pressure.”
Mrs Phillips said despite the small number or registrations for the two cooking sessions, five in the morning and 10 for the afternoon, it was still a good day.
“We were very happy to have someone like Kumar come along, the students and I were honoured,” she said.
“It’s a great coup for the school to have someone like him come along.”
Mr Pereira is in the process of writing a book and will lead a culinary tour of Sri Lanka later this year.
There are still a number of Seniors Week activities this week including a free safe at home session at Orange City Council’s Community Support Services at 10am today, call 6393 8053 to book.
