Children ready for clean sweep

MANY hands will make light work this Clean Up Australia Day as some of Orange’s littlest residents get together to clean up their communities.

About 20 children and staff from Spring Street Children’s Centre will take part in the annual clean up, with the children eager keen to do their bit for a cleaner city.

Acting children’s centre coordinator Dale Lovett said the children had been learning about rubbish, its effect on the environment, and also had a clean up in the centre’s grounds.

“I believe it’s something that should be instilled in children from a really young age,” she said.

“It teaches them that it’s not only council’s responsibly, but everyone’s responsibility if they want to live in a nice environment.”

While the children will hold their clean up at Margaret Stephenson Park on Friday, the official Clean Up Australia Day is this Sunday.

Orange City Council hopes to have more than 100 people helping out at six clean-up sites across the city on the day.

Orange City Council Clean Up Australia Day organiser Roger Smith said 50 bags of rubbish,  10 shopping trolleys and dumped car tyres were collected during last year’s clean up.

“Council’s the driver but we’ve got a lot of service clubs involved and a lot of business owners,” he said.

“Even though it’s public land, it’s up to the community to get on board and help keep their public places clean.”

Clean Up Australia Day has been held in Orange for more than 20 years and Mr Smith hopes there will be a good turn out of people this year.

To take part in this year’s event simply turn up at any of the six locations across Orange.

There will be a free barbecue provided for all participants at Elephant Park and at  the Carriage Cottage at the end of the clean up.
