Power price rise well before carbon tax

SINCE and before the introduction of the carbon pricing much has been said about the extra cost of electricity due to the composition of this tax.

My electricity account for the period July 2008 showed 14.494 cents per unit for power plus 46 cents per day availability charge.

For June 2012 it shows 26.228 cents per unit for power plus 98 cents per day availability charge.

These charges are subject to GST.

So the increase over four years appears to be power 80 per cent and availability 113 per cent - an overall average exceeding 20 per cent per year and those increases were prior to any carbon tax.

This information may be of interest to readers screaming about the “excessive” increases of 18 per cent forecasted from July 2012 all being attributed to the carbon tax.
