The Warwick Farm entry won the Millamolong Polo Benchmark 69 Handicap (1600m) by half a length on a dead (4) track.
Cross said it was a simple race.
“He just was sort of second and third most of the way and then was a a little bit stronger at the finish,” Cross (pictured) explained.
“There was nothing special. He did what he had to do. “
The Brett Thompson-trained Eureka Joh ($6.50) jumped well and the led the field right to the final turn.
Then the rest of the field swamped the gelding and he finished sixth.
Haut Normandie ($3.20 fav), with Jeff Panza on board, finished half a length ahead of Garry McCarney’s Fox Solid ($3.40) from Wellington.
Another Warwick Farm entry, mare Minh Khai ($4.00) trained by John Steinmetz was a further half-head back.
Orange’s Side On ($15.00), trained by Alison Smith, came in fourth.
The Warwick Farm trainer said he wasn’t sure where he would take Haut Normandie next.
“He’s no diamond buy this horse,” he laughed.
“We’ll just take him home and see how he goes. We haven’t got any ambitions for him.”
Cross said he was happy to be in Orange yesterday.
“I come here maybe two or three times a year,” Cross said.
“It suited us today to be here. It was the right races for the horses. I was happy to come and happy to win.”
The next Racing Orange meeting at Towac Park will be on Monday, March 11.
