Public Works to finish housing

PEOPLE on the public housing waiting list are a step closer to having a place to call home, with subcontractors resuming work on three stalled public housing projects in Orange.

A Department of Finance and Services spokesman said work on 43 units in Matthews Avenue and Dalton Street kicked off yesterday.

“Activity will be ramped up next week with a number of trades scheduled to be on-site to take the projects through to completion,” he said.

The department decided to appoint NSW Public Works to oversee the completion of 13 unfinished housing projects across the state.

NSW Public Works has been reviewing all subcontract arrangements put in place by construction comany St Hilliers, which went into voluntary administration in May, and appointing new or existing subcontractors to complete the work.

“The patience and cooperation of subcontractors while this due diligence is being completed is appreciated,” the spokesman said.

Nine projects have been resumed as a result of NSW Public Works’ appointment, three in the Illawarra, one in Coffs Harbour, one in Campbelltown, one in Casula and three in Orange.
