Held nationally every year, the Summer Reading Club provides children in preschool, primary and secondary school with a fun reading program during the summer holidays and aims to foster a love of books, reading, literature and libraries.
Reading and writing co-ordinator Jasmin Vidler said children could sign up to the reading club at any Central West Libraries branch, as well as register online at www.summerreadingclub.org.au to go in the draw to win great prizes, including an iPod.
The website also has loads of online activities, stories, competitions, recommended reading lists and book reviews.
“The Summer Reading Club encourages kids to keep up their reading skills throughout the holidays and highlights the fun element of reading,” Ms Vidler said.
Last year, 1006 public libraries across Australia participated in the program, with 19,173 children registered and an estimated 150,799 books read.
The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Club is Untangled Tales, focusing on multicultural folk and fairytales, stories filled with magic, adventure, humour and suspense.
Orange City Library will hold a Summer Reading Club finale on Thursday, January 24, from 1.30pm to 2.30pm, to celebrate the end of a successful summer of reading.
The theme for the finale is Fractured Fairytales and children are encouraged to come along and write a fractured ending to their favourite fairytale. There will be prizes awarded for the most inventive stories, and entries will be placed on the library blog.
To RSVP for the finale contact the library on 6393-8132.
