The keen camper bundled up three of his unused tents and took them to the park to give to the four backpackers.
“I felt so sorry for them,” he said.
“I reckon it’s terrible. I only live about a block away and I’ve never had a problem.”
Orange City Council enterprise services director Stephen Sykes said the council would provide the backpackers with a night’s accommodation as a gesture of good will.
“Some community people indicated they wanted to provide them with some support, which demonstrates the community cares,” he said.
“Maybe the community might have other things they’re not using.”
Mr Sykes said the council would leave investigations into the fire to police.
“There’s no history of anything happening,” he said.
“It would be like if someone left a car here and it was burnt out.
“It’s not the council’s responsibility but we recognise there’s a human element.”
