Committee members set a goal of $60,000 for the September ball but blitzed that figure with more than $105,000 raised for cancer research and support.
“I think we all [organisers] were totally gobsmacked, we couldn’t believe it,” sponsor and communications co-ordinator Peta Chapman told the Central Western Daily.
“We were all really proud of our efforts.”
Committee chair Angela Frazer said the money raised would be used for several crucial projects.
“A percentage of the funds will go towards a research project due to commence at Westmead Hospital in the new year,” she said.
“The project aims to work with the shelf immune cells for the treatment of leukaemia and lymphoma to help find vaccinations for these diseases.
“In addition, funds will also be spent on a patient transport car to assist Orange patients to and from their treatments.”
Committee treasurer Hugh Gardiner confirmed they planned on purchasing a Toyota Corolla, to help patients get to important medical appointments.
“The money raised will help purchase a Toyota Corolla and will also cover all on road costs and maintenance for the next three years,” he said.
“It’ll help enable people who need specialist treatment in Sydney get there without any great costs.”
Mrs Frazer said a remaining $5000 would be donated to another fundraising event planned for Orange next year, which will also raise support and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Organisers gained inspiration for the ball after two friends suffered from the blood related cancer, and hailed the event a big success.
“We wanted to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, promote our local community and create and amazing event that left guests with a sparkle in their step,” Mrs Frazer said.
“The event sold out in only three weeks and we blitzed the fund raising target by $45,000.”
