A security guard at Orange Central alerted police at around 3pm when he discovered the one-year old and seven-year-old children alone in a vehicle in the car’s undercover car park.
Just as police were about to break the car’s window the mother returned, and told police she’d only left the children for approximately 15 minutes.
While the children did not require medical attention the mother was issued with an infringement notice and the Department of Community Services has been notified about the incident in accordance with the law.
Canobolas Local Area Command supervisor Jane Paroissien warned people of the dangers of leaving children unattended in a vehicle on a hot day.
“In the lead-up to Christmas and the hot weather people should be reminded not to leave children unattended even in covered car parks, there’s still a danger,” Sergeant Paroissien said.
“While it may be tempting for some people they need to know police will deal with them in the appropriate manner.”
Temperatures yesterday were expected to hit a top of 28 degrees.
