BIG-RACE jockey Glen Boss is not expecting to beat Samantha Miss in Saturday's group 1 Flight Stakes at Randwick but warns not to underestimate the Kim Waugh-trained Kimillsy.
"On what Samantha Miss has been doing, it is impossible to say with confidence that you will be able to beat her," Boss said yesterday before riding Olonana to victory at Flemington for trainer John O'Shea. "But racing can be funny at times. If anything goes wrong at all for Samantha Miss, then Kimillsy is the one that is most likely to pounce."
Kimillsy was a last-start second to Samantha Miss in the Tea Rose Stakes at Rosehill, with Boss saying: "She's a good honest filly, she has a good race in her."
Waugh will also be represented in the group 1 The Metropolitan at Randwick with Hong Kong-based jockey Zac Purton returning to ride Tangalooma.
"Zac was coming back to ride Theseo for Gai Waterhouse in the Epsom so we snapped him up for Tangalooma," Waugh said. "He ran very well when second in the Colin Stephen on Saturday and he's an out-and-out stayer. He's in with a chance."
BOWMAN CONFIDENT: Hugh Bowman came up winless at Randwick on George Main Stakes day but is out to atone this weekend, with Samantha Miss in the Flight Stakes headlining his rides. "She'll win again," Bowman said. "And I've got Reigning To Win in the Epsom and Stalingrad in the Spring Champion. They are both in with chances."
Stalingrad is trained by Tim Martin and was a last-start second to Predatory Pricer in the Gloaming Stakes.
Martin will also start Manikato Stakes winner Typhoon Zed at Randwick in The Shorts with Corey Brown to ride while his quality sprinter Murtajill resumes at Flemington in the Gilgai Stakes with Damien Oliver aboard.
UNCERTAIN TESS: David Payne is undecided about Gallant Tess running in Saturday's Epsom Handicap but Naval Escort is a definite starter in the Spring Champion Stakes. He will not back-up Emperor Bonaparte, which came from the tail in last Saturday's Dulcify Quality to beat all but Rhyno Chaser, which is in the Spring Champion.
"Naval Escort is a nice horse and the form is a lot better than what we've seen," Payne said yesterday. "He should have been right on top of Predatory Pricer the other day at Rosehill, he travelled four and five wide, the jockey didn't make use of him."
Payne described Emperor Bonaparte "as a young horse with a bright future" and added: "I'll take him to Melbourne, have a crack at the derby down there."
Payne admitted making a mistake when starting Stripper in the Tea Rose Stakes at Rosehill last Saturday week in which the filly finished fifth behind Samantha Miss, which is out to make a clean sweep of the Princess Series with victory in the Flight Stakes.
"Stripper will run in the Flight Stakes," Payne said. "I should never have run her the other day, it was my fault. She had an underlying low-grade virus, it didn't show up but she wasn't herself. Samantha Miss is a good filly but I'd like to meet her on my own terms."
MAIDEN MYSTERY: Jockey Peter Robl finds it hard to believe the Clarry Conners-trained Glowlamp remains a maiden. The pair are set to clash with dominant filly Samantha Miss in the Flight Stakes. "She is as tough as they come and I'm hoping her turn comes sooner rather than later," Robl said yesterday, while quipping: "I do believe if they have plans of running Samantha Miss in the Cox Plate they should go down before the Flight Stakes, she will need to acclimatise."
MIMI EYES MYER: The Bart Cummings-trained Australian Cup winner Sirmione galloped with stablemate and Magic Millions winner Mimi Lebrock at Moonee Valley on Friday night. Cummings is eyeing off the group 1 Myer Classic with Mimi Lebrock, which scored a slashing win in the Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington three weeks ago, while the Caulfield Cup is not part of Sirmione's program. "He will run in the Yalumba Stakes and then the Cox Plate," Cummings said.
The maestro is hoping God's Hand can sneak into Saturday's Epsom Handicap at Randwick.
"The horse is going good but if he doesn't get a run we'll go to Melbourne and win the Toorak," Cummings said.
GOOD JOURNEY: Godolphin's Caulfield and Melbourne cups hope All The Good and travelling companion Book Of Music arrived at the Sandown quarantine station on Saturday, with Racing Victoria's Leigh Jordon reporting they arrived in good order.
UK trainer Luca Cumani also had his two raiders, Mad Rush and Bauer, settle in. Mad Rush is headed for the Caulfield Cup while Bauer will try qualifying for the Melbourne Cup through the Geelong Cup. SPRING MARKETS CAULFIELD CUP
