ORANGE will host the final Central West Interclub Triathlon round tomorrow, chasing a third consecutive title.
Matt Dean is a serious chance to take out the men’s 30-39 years event but that’s not his main focus.
The Orange triathlete’s first priority on Sunday morning will be helping his four children through the midget and junior events.
Dean, and wife Estelle, will help Harry (5) and Molly (6) through the midget event before turning to Abby (8) and Jessie (9) in the junior race.
Then it will be Matt and Estelle’s turn to test themselves in the long course.
Dean, 37, is expected to be competitive.
“I normally finish in the top three in my age division. Steve Martin and I normally fight it out for the top spot in our age,” Dean explained.
Martin is not expected to race tomorrow as he will be helping coordinate so Dean is a real shot to finish on top in his age at home.
It is performances like this which will help Orange towards their goal of a third straight Interclub title.
After last month’s round in Dubbo, Orange sits on top of the ladder with 874 points and Mudgee are second on 765.
It is this 109-point gap which gives Dean confidence Orange can maintain the lead.
“I’m pretty confident we’ve got enough points,” Dean said.
“After Dubbo when we got a bit further in front and we had similar numbers to Mudgee, we knew we’d have the numbers at home to seal the victory.”
In tomorrow’s long course at Lake Canobolas, competitors will have 400m swim followed by a 18km ride and 4km run.
“On Sunday the swim will be pretty full on with the number of people we’ll have and then it’s a matter of getting on your bike and going as hard as you can and then trying to punch out a solid 4km run,” Dean explained.
He said even though Orange and Mudgee have established a strong rivalry in the sport, they don’t take it too seriously.
Tomorrow’s event will at Lake Canobolas with registrations at 7.45am, midgets at 8.50am followed by juniors and seniors.
