Orange clubs hope for Saturday night derby

A BLOCKBUSTER Saturday night local derby could kick-off the 2010 Group 10 season for Orange Hawks and CYMS after the release of next year’s draw.

Hawks and CYMS will meet in round one next season and while the competition is scheduled to start on Sunday, May 2, both Orange captain-coaches would love to see the game brought forward to Saturday night.

CYMS are down to host the opening round fixture and will need to approach Group 10 about changing the game time, while the timing of work announced last month to fix up the Wade Park playing surface is another factor in possibly playing the match under lights.

But new CYMS captain-coach Michael Sullivan is keen to play the spectacle under lights in what will be his maiden Orange derby and possibly first game for CYMS as he targets a round one return from a foot injury.

“I guess it would be a good way to start things,” Sullivan said.

“I think it’s a good thing to see where we’re at and to spark some interest in the town.

“Saturday night under lights, I know when I’ve played in the city, you always get better crowds.”

Hawks counterpart Todd Barrow is also a fan of moving the game to Saturday night and he revealed their club is likely to play most of their home games on Saturday next season rather than the traditional Sunday afternoon time slot.

Next season’s draw mirrors this year’s scheduling, although there have been changes in first division with Blayney and Oberon returning to senior Group 10 competition.

Each club with a team in each of the three grades will see their premier league side have two byes next season.

First division and under 18s teams will play two games, one on the Saturday and the second on Sunday, with Oberon and Blayney alternating which day they play.

Group 10 secretary Peter McDonald has stated though clubs are welcome to transfer those games mid-week if the two clubs agree to avoid players backing up one day after their previous match.

Hawks’ premier league side is scheduled for the bye in rounds four and 11, while CYMS have the week off in the top grade in rounds five and 12.

CYMS’ second bye comes three weeks before the semi-finals and should the green and golds feature in the finals, Sullivan thinks that is ideal timing for a week off.

“That’s perfect,” he said.

“You don’t want to have a bye in the last round because you can ease off, but three weeks out is perfect because you can do a few fun things.”

The two Orange clubs will have a good indication of whether they could feature in finals action after just two rounds as they both play last season’s grand finalists in round two.

CYMS will host defending premiers, Mudgee in the second round, with Hawks away to Lithgow Workies.

A grand final replay will follow in round three and will be played in Mudgee on May 16.

The WIN Challenge, the pre-season competition, will run from April 10-24.
